Eight hundred years ago the great wyrms fought a war that cracked a continent. They ended it at the Emberwright Forge, where the terms were beaten into a ring of iron plates that hang there still. The first line struck into the first plate reads: no dragon may kill another dragon.
Two hundred years have passed since one of them last took wing in anger. So the wars are fought with grain and generals, with poisoned heirs and burned granaries and the half-blooded children the courts breed for exactly this purpose, and the dying is done by people the plates were never written to protect.
